  • How much will my hens eat?

    Feeding your hens

Your chickens should have a constant supply of food throughout the day. Chickens will eat when they need it and should go to bed with a full crop as they need lots of food to produce eggs. A fully-grown chicken will typically eat about 120 grams of layers pellets a day.

    10kg bag of feed

    1 chicken 83 days

    2 chickens 42 days

    3 chickens 28 days

    4 chickens 21 days

    5 chickens 17 days

    6 chickens 14 days

    20kg bag of feed

    1 chicken 167 days

    2 chickens 83 days

    3 chickens 56 days

    4 chickens 42 days

    5 chickens 33 days

    6 chickens 28 days

    Grit

Chickens need to eat small stones in order to help digest their food. Chickens don’t have teeth so swallow whatever they choose to eat whole. Any grit they eat is used to grind up food in their Gizzard. When keeping chickens, it is important to give them a supply of grit as they may not be able to naturally find enough grit.

    Corn

Chickens absolutely love corn and will come running at the sound of you getting their corn. Corn is a great way to tame your chickens. However mixed corn is high in fat so should only be given as a treat, as an overweight chicken won’t lay as many tasty eggs. A handful of corn per hen scattered on the ground is plenty.

  • How often is the website updated?

Our website is updated nearly every day, stock levels are accurate and are automatically updated

  • Are the hens vaccinated?

All our pol hybrids have gone through a sixteen week vaccination program.

  • When will my hens start laying?

Each hen is an individual and will lay in their own time.  Most hens will start to lay within the "normal" point of lay period (16-24 weeks old), however hens respond differently to the stress of moving to a new home so don't be concerned if they don't lay straight away

  • How often should I clean out my coop

We clean out all of our pens each week.

Taking out all bedding, spraying top to botton with a defra approved disinfectant. (Virkon S)

We then spread sanitiser and red mite powder before putting down fresh bedding.

We would recommend a similar routine to ensure the continued health of your hens.

  • Are the hens guaranteed?

We have a weekly cleaning regime to keep our pens free from disease, we would never knowingly sell a poorly hen.

Sometimes the stress of moving house,  whether to a new pen or a new flock can unsettle the hens and make them a bit under the weather.

If this is the case, we would recommend a booster product such as Nettex power drops or Agrivite poultry drink.

We do not take hens back into our shed as we have no control of their enviroment once they have left us.
